History of the Band

Prior to 1999 a few piping and drumming enthusiasts joined forces periodically for major functions such as Anzac Day in the Southern Highlands. This group then approached Rod Parker of Moss Vale to start a band. Rod is a well-known piper throughout Australia and has played in many of the bands including The NSW Police Pipe band taking part in the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Royal Tournament, The City of Blacktown First Grade Pipe Band competing in the World pipe Band Championships and many other competitions in Scotland.. Rod instigated the Parramatta Police Boys Club Pipe Band some years ago and has tutored many of today’s pipe majors.

Following this approach by a few stalwarts, the Highlands Pipes and Drums was formed and began playing in public on Anzac Day 1999.The band now fields on average, twelve pipers, seven drummers and a Drum Major.

Many members of the band are local school children and almost all reside within the Southern Highlands.

Not only do our pipers and drummers receive tuition from Rod Parker, our Pipe Tutor and founding Pipe Major.
They also travel further afield for extra tuition from other experts in piping and drumming.
We attend regular workshops in Sydney and Canberra as well as the Southern Highlands.
